One of the challenges of the serious orchidologist is to extend the lifespan of a plant that produces beautiful flowers and one strategy is to make sure it gets the right amount of orchid food.

Plant nutrition may seem like a mysterious affair to some people. You do not see plants eating. They do consume water and use light to produce carbohydrates. The most important requirements for any plant, therefore, is the availability of water, efficient ventilation and access to light, whether this is sunlight or artificial UV lighting.

The process is boosted if the right mineral elements are available to the plant. In nature, the soil collects decomposing waste. Fallen leaves and bird or animal droppings play a useful role, as does rain water which carries valuable mineral traces. Bacteria and other minute animals convert this potential source of energy into nutrients that the plant in turn can use to promote its growth. All beings in this complicated food chain benefit from it in some way.

Within a hothouse set-up, your potted orchids will be growing in a closed system, without access to such advantages. Therefore you will need to add them to their environment on a regular basis. The main ingredients of all commercial fertilizers are compounds of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium, but the ratio in which these are combined may vary considerably. On the labelling, this ratio is given as the NPK, in other words nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potash or potassium. (K). A ratio of 10: 10: 10 will indicate an equal division of 10 percent of each, while 30: 10: 10 indicates fertilizer with a considerably higher content of nitrogen.

Since artificial fertilizers are sold in concentrated form, they may damage your orchids if applied too frequently. One product to avoid is Urea. While this is an inexpensive form of nitrogen, the plant needs an eco-system of various bacteria to break it down into accessible food. A potted orchid’s environment is too sterile to allow this, and the high salt content may damage the roots. Nitrate and ammoniacal nitrogen are far more digestible to orchids.

The different elements of your fertilizer have differing functions. Nitrogen, for example, has little effect on the flowering of your orchids, but stimulates new foliage, which in turn enables the plant to photosynthesise more efficiently. For the development of beautiful orchids in the flowering season, you will need to include phosphorus and potassium into the mix.

Orchids rooted in bark will need a higher concentration of nitrogen and will benefit from a NPK ratio of 30-10-10, which contains three times as much nitrogen. This is because the bark will absorb some of the fertilizer that should go to the roots of your orchid.

Use the orchid food as directed by the label, which is once a month in the case of most types of fertilizer.

If cultivating orchids is your passion, you may want to consider turning your hobby into a lucrative orchid farm.

Since there are over 30,000 species of orchid to choose from, you will need to specialize. One good way to decide would be to look at the needs of different genera and to consider which ones best match the growing environment you are able to provide. Buy the initial plants for your enterprise from a reputable orchid dealer.

If you wish to convert an indoor space such as a basement or garage for orchid cultivation, you will need to set up a working water drainage system. The installation of an oscillation fan will ensure adequate ventilation and vapor seal paint will protect the structure of the building from the type of damage caused by the high humidity. The plants will also need suitable lighting.

To set up a mini greenhouse for your orchids, you may need a thermometer and electric heater, UV lighting, a watering can, fertilizer, a humidifier and a shade cloth.

One of the challenges in marketing an orchid farm to potential customers lies in defining the needs of your potential customers. People purchase orchids for their beauty when in full bloom, but many do not have the patience to care for an orchid during the less attractive phases of its growth cycle. This is particularly true of corporate entities, restaurants, hotels and guesthouses that require orchids for display purposes only. For such clients, an orchid farm that offers boarding services may provide the ideal solution. The company has access to flowering orchids year round, while the non-flowering plants are cared for by specialists at a minimum charge. This may greatly increase the life span and future attraction of the flowers in question.

Individual orchid plants bloom for 1 to 3 months of the year and by rotating their plants, some orchid fans ensure that their home boasts blooming orchids year round. The monthly fee for orchid boarding is usually small, although an additional charge may be levied for re-potting.

In order to provide such a service to private or corporate clients, you will need space to care for different types of orchids within their requirements for optimum performance.

On the other hand, you may concentrate primarily on sales. The Tropical Orchid Farm situated in Maui, boasts a collection of over 90 different species and part of the focus is on preserving rarer types of orchid. Phuket Orchid Farm in Thailand has a collection of over 1500 species and hybrids of orchids. They offer tours, with a complimentary bouquet, cut flowers, seeds in sterilized bottles and also flask gardens. In this way, the business offers retail sales, but also serves as a tourist attraction. Thailand is the largest exporter of orchids in the world.

Whatever you hope to achieve with your orchid farm, the exercise is sure to prove rewarding.

Many people enjoy caring for orchids outdoors. Although it is very popular to keep orchids indoors, the outdoor orchid can add color and vibrancy to your yard or garden. Caring for orchids can be somewhat tricky, however, as orchids are very delicate and need to be cared for with particular detail.

If you are thinking of keeping your orchids outdoors, a few things must be considered first. You will need to think about the species of your orchid, the temperature of your location, the time of year you are planting, and if you are planting seeds or flowers.

If you are planting orchid seeds, it is recommended to grow them indoors first. Keeping orchid seeds indoors until they are flowering ensures their survival to maturity, making the orchid stronger. Also, if you choose to put your orchid outdoors after growing it indoors, you will need to know how to properly introduce it to the outside.

Indoor orchids which are converted to outdoor orchids must be carefully introduced to their new environment. There are many reasons for this including changes in temperature, the amount of sunlight, and pests. If you are converting your indoor orchids to outdoor orchids after they have bloomed, keep watch over them.

It is important your orchid be slowly introduced to the outside and that you find the right spot. Too much direct sunlight can kill your orchid, so a place where there is some shade is best. If your indoor plant is suddenly becoming an outdoor plant, let your plant outside for a few hours each day, then gradually add on more time until your plant is used to being outdoors.

Also, do not keep your plant outdoors in severe weather. Too much wind and drastic temperatures can harm your orchid as well. Some orchids are particularly better at becoming outdoor plants and planting them in the ground is okay as long as you have the correct soil. Other orchid species are better kept inside their pots in order to be mobile in the event of bad weather.

Orchids should not be planted outdoors in harsh winter weather or times of the year when the weather is very wet. Because of their sensitivity to dampness, too much rain can cause an orchid to get a fungus. Temperatures too extreme either hot or cold can also cause your plant to die. Keep in mind that caring for orchids outdoors requires a great deal of attention paid to the environment.

There are numerous reasons for repotting orchids. Orchids, like all plants, need room to grow and expand. Taking care of orchids does require them to be replanted occasionally.

Orchids have long been domesticated. There are over thirty five thousand species of orchids on Earth and orchids have been around since the days of the dinosaurs, They have been harvested and cultivated all over the world for their beauty and scent since the times of Ancient Greece. Still, many people do not feel they need to repot their orchids or are unsure why they should.

One of the reasons you should repot your orchid is, of course, growth. When your orchid is brand new in its pot and you bring your orchid home, it is just the right size for the pot. As you take care of your orchid it continues to thrive and grow, much like a child. You may see that your orchid is outgrowing its pot., It may have too many green shoots or it may be overflowing over the rim of the pot. The orchids roots may be growing our of the hole in the bottom. If this is the case, it is time to repot your orchid and divide it into more pots.

Another reason for repotting your orchid is pests. Nobody likes bugs, and your orchid is no exception this. In fact, certain types of pests can be very harmful to orchids, even life threatening. Orchids can have root rot, mold, or fungus as well from too much water and that will definitely kill your orchid. If this is the case and your orchid has root rot, cut off any moldy or dead parts of the root with sterile scissors before repotting. If your orchid has pests, such as aphids or snails, get rid of the pests before repotting your orchid.

People also repot their orchid for beauty reasons. If you see a lovely plant pot you just have to have, it is okay to repot your orchid. Make sure the new pot is clean. If the new pot selected has been used by other plants, make sure the pot is thoroughly sanitized before you plant your orchid in it. Old plants can carry diseases as well and those can transfer to your new plant.

Although, it may seem like a chore, repotting orchids is actually very simple as long as you follow certain rules. Make sure to use clean soil and the right type of pot. Also feed your orchid and keep it well taken care of. Caring for them is also one of the reasons for repotting orchids.

There are numerous factors to consider when selecting orchid food. The natural habitat of your orchid is, by far , the most important factor to keep in mind. The food for a terrestrial orchid will be much different than the food for an epiphyte orchid because the nutritional requirements differ.

Orchids have been around for millions of years. These beautiful plants were around when the dinosaurs roamed the Earth and there are over thirty thousand species of orchids known today. Orchids have a long, rich history. In ancient Greece orchids first began being cultivated and were revered for their beauty. In China orchids represented wealth and exotic beauty.

Now, orchids hold many different meanings. Orchids are used in weddings and for prom corsages. They are prized plants which are grown for show. Some species of orchids are grown for their perfumes and their taste.

People often put orchids in their home to add a sense of balance and delicate beauty. Orchids inside the home are generally cared for differently than those outside the home, although the basic needs are the same. If you have an orchid as a house plant, then you probably have a terrestrial plant.

In the wild, terrestrial plants require a balanced diet of nutrients, which they receive from the earth and decaying leaves around them. Orchids generally require three types of nutrients, potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorous. House plants, or rather terrestrial plants, usually get this balanced diet in nature and will need a fertilizer which has a balanced diet.

Orchids which are epiphyte, usually grow in a symbiotic relationship with other plants, such as trees. These orchids will attach their roots to dead or dying trees and receive their nutrients from its bark. Because they are competing against the bacteria that causes the trees to decay, these epiphyte orchids require a fertilizer which has a higher amount of nitrogen.

There are many different types of plant food, however, there are special plant foods and fertilizers which are specifically made for different types of orchids. Your local plant nursery or plant food store will have varieties of orchid food to choose from. Make sure to know which type of orchid you are feeding.

Also, although orchids can live off water and sunlight, as most other plants can, it is important to give your orchid food in order to keep a more vibrant bloom each year. Feeding your orchid a little bit each week, and when you change its soil, should be enough. Do not feed it as often when it is not blooming. Plant nurseries can assist you in selecting orchid food that is right for your plant.

Many plant enthusiasts love orchids and often wonder how to start an orchid farm themselves. Orchids are beautiful plants which have been cultivated for thousands of years. Orchid farming can be a wonderfully rewarding career or hobby, however, it requires time, patience, and an extensive amount of knowledge.

If you are considering starting an orchid farm, make sure to know your business. Take a few college botany courses and some specialized classes in orchids. Select the specific types of plants you will be farming and learn everything you can about them.

There are two main types of orchids in the wild, terrestrial orchids and epiphyte orchids. Terrestrial orchids are often easier to keep at home, and therefore can be more profitable overall due to high demand. Epiphyte orchids, however, are exotic and can be rewarding in themselves because of their exotic nature. Because there are thousands of different orchid types, choose the orchids you are most comfortable farming and then learn all you can about them.

Make enough room for your orchids. Orchid farming will require a lot of space if you are looking for a profit. A greenhouse is also necessary for people who live in areas where the temperature can get very cold. Make sure you have a greenhouse ready for your orchid before you begin your orchid farming.

Allow time for growth. Orchids usually need the first few years of life to grow before they begin booming, therefore, you will have a few years of time before making a profit from orchids in bloom. Make sure to take good care of your orchids while they are growing so that they become healthy and strong when they begin to bloom.

Orchids require food. Although sunlight and water are the staples of any plant, feeding your orchids the correct amount of vitamins and nutrients will allow your orchids to loom to their full potential and will increaser the worth of your plant.

If you are growing orchids for profit, make sure to have any necessary legal licenses. If a specific license is required for growing and selling orchids, it is necessary to get this license. If building permits are needed for your greenhouse, make sure to have all building permits ready.

Orchid farming can be quite profitable and rewarding. However, because of the delicate nature of these plants, it is recommended you research how to start and orchid farm before beginning this project.

Orchids are among the most beautiful plants, however, indoor caring for orchids can be a little tricky of you don’t know how. Orchids have been loved for many years by many different cultures. In ancient Greece, orchids were a sign of wealth. In ancient China, these flowers were a symbol of beauty. Orchids are exotic and highly prized even now in this day and age.

Many places offer indoor orchids for sale. They usually come pre-potted and already in bloom. However, once you get the orchid home, it can be difficult to understand how to keep the orchid alive. Orchids are unlike regular houseplants and require certain temperatures and special care.

One of the things to watch out for with indoor caring for orchids is their pot. Orchids require a special type of soil, not the usual houseplant soil. Soil with absorption such as wood chips or cork is a great idea. Many plant nurseries sell special soil specifically made for orchids.

Also, make sure the pot you keep your orchid in is porous. A clay pot with extra holes at the bottom is highly recommended. Orchids need room to grow, also, so be sure to re-pot your orchid as needed.

The temperature of your home is also important in orchid care. Temperatures during the day between 65 and 85 degreed Fahrenheit are best for growing orchids, however, the nighttime temperatures should be lower to try to emulate the natural habitat.

When keeping your orchid indoors, make sure to give your plant plenty of sunlight. Orchids require daily sunlight for healthy growth, however, do not give them direct sunlight. Keeping your orchid in a hot, sunny window all day can cause your orchid to dry out. Make sure to have a thin curtain in the window to give your orchid a little filter.

Another thing to consider when indoor caring for orchids is the water. Often people over water their orchids and that can cause them to die. Orchids do require water, however, setting a plate of water and pebbles under the orchid pot will help keep it moist and actually watering the plant is not necessary daily.

Orchids are beautiful plants and come in many different shades and styles. However, it is important to care for them carefully, as they are very delicate plants. Keeping these few tips in mind will help give your orchid a long life and help you with your indoor caring for orchids.

There are ways of easily repotting orchids. Many people fear repotting orchids, however, because they are such delicate plants. Orchids require specific temperatures and light. They are sensitive to change and can become listless and unresponsive to new environments.

Be assured, however, that repotting orchids is not nearly as daunting as it may sound. Orchids have been cared for in people’s homes and yards since the times of Ancient Greece, therefore, it should be no surprise people have found an easy way to repot them.

The first step in repotting your orchid is to get the right pot. Clay pots or terra cotta pots are extremely popular and they come in many different sizes. If your orchid has outgrown the pot it is currently in, a clay pot can be an excellent choice to change to.

First, prepare the new clay pot. Make sure it is clean. If you are reusing an old plant pot, soak the clay pot in water with a capful of bleach. Then, allow the pot to dry thoroughly. This ensures the new pot is rid of any possible diseases from the old plant. If it is a new pot, you do not have to worry about this step. This is simply to avoid cross contamination of other plant illnesses as a preventative measure.

Next, soak the pot in plain water fro a few days. Clay pots are dry and soaking them in water allows the moisture to seep into the terra cotta so your orchid will not get dried out. Once the clay pot has been soaked, put a few packing peanuts in the bottom of the pot to give your orchid’s roots something to cling to and to soak up excess moisture. Too much moisture can cause the roots to get moldy or rot.

Now, very gently remove your orchid from the old pot. Using sterile scissors, clip off any rotted roots or dead ends to promote growth and stop root damage. Put the orchid in the new pot and then surround it with new potting material. It is advisable to soak the new potting material in a little water to moisten it before planting your orchid.

Now, make sure your orchid is secured snugly in the new pot. Continue to watch your orchid for any signs of distress and make any necessary adjustments to the water or soil in the orchids new pot. Although orchids can be sensitive there are ways of easily repotting orchids.

There are many different types of orchid food, because there are many different types of orchids. Some orchids are terrestrial and live on the ground. They eat by absorbing nutrients from dead leaves and ground water into their shoots. Other orchids attach their roots to trees and survive by living on the tree and soaking up the nutrients through the bark. Often the tree they are attached too is dead, so the orchids feed off of the decaying tree’s supply of nutrients.

In the wild, orchids are capable of getting their nutrients from the earth and plants they live on and around. However, if you keep orchids in your home, you may want to consider purchasing specialized orchid food. Orchids live off of water and sunlight, just as well as their plants. Those two things are necessary for an orchids survival. However, feeling your orchid specialized plant food will ensure a more abundant flower growth during blooming season.

If you are unsure which type of food to purchase for your orchid, consider its needs in the wild. If your orchid is growing in bark and you are purchasing plant food for your orchid, a high amount of nitrogen is needed more than a larger amount of phosphorous or potassium. Purchase a fertilizer specially made with higher amounts of nitrogen to feed your orchid.

If your orchid is terrestrial in nature, a balanced diet of these elements will do better for your plant. Orchids which are terrestrial receive nutrients from the ground which has a more well rounded abundance of nutrients. If you purchase a balanced fertilizer, make sure it is specifically formulated for your orchid.

Orchids only need to be fertilized about once a week. When they are blooming it is important to keep their nutrients well balanced so they are healthy and strong in growth. However, when your orchid is not in bloom, it is important not to overfeed your orchid. Anytime you repot your orchid, allow a little food to be given to your plant. Repotting your orchid and changing the soil can alter the balance of nutrients your plant is receiving.

Orchids are very beautiful and will continue to bloom for a long time when cared for properly. If you have questions regarding which plant fertilizer to use, your local plant nursery will be able to assist you with your purchase. Remember that there are different types of orchid food for different orchids so be sure to choose your food properly.

There are orchid farm facts a person should know when beginning an orchid farm.
